China runs on coal. The stuff in our homes is filled with goods that were made with the burning of Chinese coal.
The country produces 7.5 million Gigawatt hours of electricity annually, which is nearly 1/3 of total global energy production.
58% of it still comes from coal.
This coal runs a vast sea of factories that produce iPhones, televisions, teddy bears, and so much more. A good fair chunk of the stuff in everybody’s homes comes from these factories.
But even though China is the largest coal producer in the world, it still doesn’t have enough coal internally, or other energy for that matter, to run all their factories. They have to import.
