I first encountered Yuval Noah Harari and his book Sapiens (affiliate link) when I was in Rwanda, in early 2015.

I began listening to it on audiobook on the bus from Mbarara, Uganda to Kigali.

In Uganda, the side of the road was strewn with trash. In Rwanda, the side of the road was pristine. I felt as if I had entered Swizerland, or Disneyland. It was a shocking difference.
